ln 1957, with the participation of approximately 50 architects, designers, educators and Scientists from 12 countries, the IACC was founded in Hilversum Holland. The motivating force was an acute shortage of professional color consultants/designers, and an absence of possibilities for competent training in the field.
IACC Colour ConSultant/DeSigner - IACC Professional Philosophy
Colour, or the concept of colour, can be approached from different perspectives and disciplines. such as: the natural sciences, colour theory. technology, philoSophy, biology. medicine. psychology and art. In the expenrience of colour, all of these perspectives and disciplines are interrelated, and from the standpoint of designing the man-made (architectural) environment, they are always involved to some extent.
Colour (and Light) are major factors in the architectural environment. Today, thanks to sophisticated techniques of research and analysis,we know that colour affects cortical activation (brain waves), functions of the autonomic nervous system, and hormonal activity, and that colour arouses definite emotional and aesthetic associations. In short: our response to colour is total; it influences us both psychologically and physiologicaIIy.
This is where the work of the professional colour consultant/designer assumes its responsibility. It also becomes evident that Colour Consultating/Design is a profession in its own right, and it must be subject to the same high Standards as is found in all other professions demanding proof of competency. It can certainly be no longer assumed, that the complex psychological. physiological and technical requirements needed to specify color in order to create beneficial environments, can be satisfied or solved by personal interpretations of what is appropriate, or by the following of colour trends and design idioms in current fashion.
Architecture and environmental design serves humans, and must therefore be humane. The professions having to do with the creation of architectural environments must pay attention to the human psychological and physiologicaI, as well as sociological responses to their creations. HUMANS- COLOUR-ENVIRONMENT.
SENSIBLE DESIGN through the integration of art and science for humane orientated man-made environments that is the IACC Philosophy. A philosophy that is realized internationally through the work of the IACC, in Europe through the EACC, in North America though the IACC-North America - in Asia through the IACC/Asia branch.
The IACC Seminars
ln 1957, the IACC established an interdisciplinary training program under the direction of its first President, the renowned colour authority, psychologist, biologist and philosopher Dr. Heinrich Frieling. This program is not only an important prerequisite for a competent command of the laws of colour, but one that also aims toward the Shaping of a colour professional that possesses comprehensive capabilities in all areas of knowledge that are necessary to create beneficial and purposeful environments.
